"Beyond the Cover: Beeswax Meets Mica, An Altered Book Assemblage"

An encaustic intensive class

SUMMER SESSION: Thurs. July 26th, 2 p.m. to Sunday July 29th, 4 pm

Using the luminous elements of beeswax, the organic shimmery properties of mica and the vintage layers of a book, a new structure is birthed in a unique personal assemblage.

en·caus·tic:

A medium consisting of beeswax, resin and oil paints, applied in molten form and then fixed with heat after its application

mica:

A heat resistant group of minerals that can be split easily into thin, transparent sheets

altered book:

A form of mixed media art that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance and/or meaning

assemblage (art):

An artistic process in which a three-dimensional artistic composition is made from putting together a variety of objects

Together, Patrice Baker and Supria Karmakar will be altering books with you to create a unique piece of personal art. We will build spaces in the book to fill with your treasures and trinkets. We will also use transparent mica to create a window in the front cover as well as a page within the book. You will be able to layer ephemera between the sheets of mica for a fascinating effect.  Pulling the whole book together with the luscious quality of encaustic.

No experience is necessary.

Cost:

$320 for 3 1/2 days of hands on fun, $150 supply fee; includes 3 Vegetarian lunches and 1 Vegetarian dinner by the fabulously talented, Resa Lent, chef and owner of Desert Rose in Elora.  Register now, limited spaces -   $100 will hold your spot.

Supria Karmakar – Supria’s Designs Studio

Supria uses the encaustic mixed media collage, as well as the altered book mediums as avenues to reflect on life’s journey.  These mediums are the perfect ‘vessel’ for her work, as they unfold stories, contain depth, intrigue, vibrancy and the unknown.  Her passion for all things encaustics began in 2006 after a successful 16-year career in social work.  Today she has made it her mission to share this passion with others; she teaches and facilitates the creative process, in encaustics, altered books and more at her Fergus studio to those who want to experience a creative retreat and revival.

Patrice Baker- Silverfish Studios

Pat is a collector. She is a collector of techniques, ideas, metals, ephemera, found objects, paper, broken bits of things, gems and containers. Although some of her work has been mixed media collage, she has spent over 15 years making one of a kind jewellery.  Her new studio space has been designed to share what she has collected and to provide a space for others to engage in art.

Together, Pat and Supria are thrilled to have the opportunity to collaborative in this exciting summer encaustic book playshop where Supria’s passion and experience for all things encaustic and books comes together with Pat’s flare for all things mica and books.
